Menopause and Strength Training

I'm postmenopausal, and my body is changing in ways I didn't anticipate.

My clothes fit differently. I'm tired in ways I didn't expect. And I am genuinely worried about getting injured doing things that used to feel easy.

As a personal trainer, my days are always pretty active. I'm in decent shape, I can pull of some badass things that most women my age can't. But when I started paying attention to what was actually happening - my bone density changing, my energy levels fluctuating, my body composition shifting even though nothing else in my routine had changed, that's when I realized strength training wasn't a vanity project anymore. It is now an absolute essential ingredient to succeed at my top priority - staying as strong as possible through all life stages.

What I've learned working with the women in our NSS community here in Stoney Creek, Hamilton, who are also navigating perimenopause and postmenopause, is that this phase demands a different approach. Our bodies need consistency, guidance, and grace to rebuild. And although I'd love to still look fabulous in a bikini, feeling confident in my clothing and feeling capable in my body is becoming increasingly more important.

But here's what continues to surprise me the most: I'm not figuring this out alone. Being around other women going through the same physical and mental changes - hearing their stories, sharing mine, discovering that what I thought was just me is actually a collective experience. This changed everything for me. It makes the work feel less like a solo struggle and more like a shared journey.

One client told me last week that she finally understood why her knees felt different. Another said she had regained energy again for the first time in years. A third realized that the mood swings she'd been white-knuckling through weren't just character flaws.

That's what community does. It normalizes what you're going through. It shows you that you're not broken, you're not alone, and you're not too late to rebuild.

If you're navigating perimenopause or postmenopause and any of this resonates with you - feeling confused, worried, exhausted, or just ready for something to shift, we'd love to have you in our community.

Strength training at this stage of life isn't optional anymore. It's an investment in the next chapter.

If this resonates with you, I'd love to chat about what strength training a this stage could look like
