Cutting Through the Nutrition Noise

I lost 80 lbs, and somewhere in that journey, I realized that nutrition didn't need to be so complicated that it stood in the way of me getting the results I wanted.

In all honestly though, when I first started, I was drowning in conflicting advice. One camp said calories don't matter, another said they're everything. One said carbs are bad, another said fat is. The noise was paralyzing. So I made a choice: I stopped listening to all those voices and committed to understanding the science behind it all.

The first principle I locked into was understanding what a calorie actually is - a unit of energy, a data point. Not a moral judgment, not something to be ashamed of, just information. I needed to know how much fuel I was putting in my body so I could understand where I was and where I needed to be. That sounds simple, but rejecting the shame around calorie counting was harder than the math itself.

Once I understood calories, I learned the three macronutrients:

  • protein

  • carbs

  • fat

And then what a balanced split looked like for me by working with a coach to dial that in.

Then came the part that actually stuck: I revamped my kitchen. I packed it with ingredients aligned with my new understanding. But this piece is key - I didn't give up being a foodie. I love food and made it my mission to not rob myself of that joy. So I learned to tweak recipes, find versions that still satisfied me, but now applied my newly acquired understanding on this topic. When I discovered that nutrition wasn't about deprivation, it was about making informed choices that still felt like living, I was cruising towards my goal.

The last piece was understanding the relationship between calorie deficit and exercise. They're separate variables that walk alongside each other. Training harder doesn't earn you extra food. A deficit is a deficit, whether you're moving or resting. They don't trade places.

All of this is what I see missing in most nutrition conversations right now. People are flooded with what to eat, what to avoid, which diet to follow. But there's not enough teaching around how to think about nutrition. How to move past the noise, understand the basics, and build a sustainable approach that actually fits YOUR life.
